Wodehouse Gymkhana

Location: Mumbai
Year: 1999

With subtle nods to the club’s colonial history the Wodehouse Gymkhana takes one back in time. Located within a heritage precinct and one of the most prominent localities of South Mumbai, the Gymkhana underwent an expansion and thus renovation became imminent. The decor we chose reflected the concept of a conservative but stately institution. In keeping with the brief that expressed a desire to create a historic atmosphere that exuded the warmth of a home atmosphere, the generous use of timber created a feeling of comfort. This together with the grand wooden staircase and balustrades, marble inlay flooring and simple yet befitting chandeliers add a touch of aristocracy.

Art deco elements in the floor’s inlay work are reminiscent of the original clubs in the west end of London, and a glance at the atrium reveals stained glass windows, timber and veneer panels underneath the roof and trusses of the age old edifice. With its welcoming interiors and feeling of warmth, it’s the perfect place to settle down for the evening with a club sandwich.
